The typical GOOPER strategy since 1968 has been to work in secret to derail / damage US policy to help win an election. From Nixon to Reagan to Bush (pere and fils), the record is compelling. Interesting to note that the 'he is not a US citizen' tactic actually started in 1992 against Bill Clinton -- but I digress.
Romney's public attempt to damage the USA seems out of character. While this list is familiar to all, I produce it below the fold for the record.
In 1968, Nixon, working with Anna Chenault, helped derail the Paris Peace Talks by having the South Vietnamese withdraw from the talks right before the election. Nixon allegedly promised the South Vietnamese (through their amabassador in the USA), a 'better' deal. LBJ had the conversation on tape and viewed it as treason. (I have heard accounts that the mere thought of the existence of this tape in the hands of the Democratic National Committee at their Watergate headquarters so terrified Nixon).
In October 1972, Nixon's National Security Advisor announced that "Peace with Honor was at hand" in Vietnam -- ending what little chance George McGovern had at the polls. Of course, there was no peace and there was no honor. Nixon bombed North Vietnam a few weeks after the election (including Christmas Eve). And then he agreed to the terms that North Vietnam had been insisting since 1968. The South Vietnamese may have received a worse deal under Nixon. Nixon merely asked for a decent interval before VNA and the Vietcong overran South Vietnam. The North Vietnamese gave Nixon 18 months and took over South Vietnam by 1975. (BTW, this is the origin of the term "October Surprise")
In 1980, rumors exist that G HW Bush went to Paris to discourage the Iranians from releasing our hostages in return for certain favors. During the 1980 campaign, the GOP said that Tehran would be a parking lot once Ronald Reagan became President. The hostages were released the day he took the oath of office. Not only did the US never retaliate against Iran, Reagan ordered the delivery of crucial weapons to Iran during his administration. Another aside, columnist Jack Anderson and his side kick, Britt Hume, routinely published articles in the summer and fall of 1980, that they would find and reveal the truth about any "October Surprise" by the Carter Administration!
In 1992, Bill Clinton was the subject of rumors that he had renounced his US citizenship during a visit to Moscow in 1970. Rumors were allegedly leaked to the Moonie Times by G HW Bush staffers at the State Department who had access to secret documents. The rumors were false. A GOOPER special prosecutor quickly acquitted the GOOPER staffers before the Clinton DOJ could go after them. As an a side, one of the GOOPERs involved in this unseemly affair, later worked at Merrill Lynch where she worked for the CEO who used TARP money to pay for that $50,000 commode.
The 1992 backup plan, leaking 'secret documents' from the FSLIC and FDIC regarding banks loans from Arkansas institutions to the Clintons led to the so-called 'Whitewater Scandal'.
